The Rail Trail
The Otago Central Rail Trail is 150 km long with Middlemarch at one end and Clyde at the other. It enables the user to really experience the renowned and unique Central Otago landscape.
The Otago Central Rail Trail is an easy year-round cycling and walking trail owned by the people of New Zealand so there is no cost for using it (although donations can be made to the Trust). To get the full experience it is best to allow four days to cycle its length although day/weekend trips from certain points are also popular. Part of this experience also is to stay, dine or drink at the many country pubs/hotels situated along the trail.
Development of the Otago Central Rail Trail.
The rail trail closed as popularity for road transport increased and unfortunately became the way of the future. Most of the rail trail was closed in 1990 when the Clyde dam begun construction, but a lobby group fought to keep the Middlemarch to Wingatui section open for the now popular tourist activity, the Tairei Gorge Railway.
In 1993, DOC with the support of many businesses and community people who formed the Otago Central Railway Trust purchased the remaining corridor that was left by the closure of the railway. By 2000 the Otago Central Rail Trail was completed with all the surfaces made suitable for mountain bikers and walkers, this included re-decking bridges and installing handrails and information signs. There has been many more enhancements made since it officially opened in 2000 as the trail has become increasingly popular.
